Jibo Community Social Robot Research Platform @Scale

  • March 15, 2024. 10am-5pm
  • Location: Basecamp Hotel (2020 Arapahoe Avenue, Boulder, CO 80302)

We at MIT Media Lab have gained a unique opportunity to turn a previously commercialized social robot Jibo into a community research platform. We are excited to be engaging with you and the HRI community to understand your needs and vision of what a social robot community platform should entail – and what could be a better venue than HRI to that!

We are planning a workshop/tutorial at the HRI 2024 conference, scheduled as a full-day on Friday, March 15th, and a robot-hosting experience prior to the session (shipping is limited to US participants for the moment due to export restrictions). The session is focused on introducing and experiencing the platform, collecting your inputs, and blossoming collaborations to build this community platform together!

We are structuring the process and participation as a study so we can share with our broader community the learnings involved in developing a community research social robot platform:

  1. Pre HRI workshop/tutorial session: We will send you a Jibo robot that we highly encourage for you to experience before attending HRI. You could simply live with Jibo in your living/working space or we will provide a tutorial to program it via ROS/firebase and you can build your own interactions with it.

  2. HRI workshop/tutorial day: the session will be designed as a community activity sharing the vision of a shared research platform and living labs, social/emotional intelligence and interaction agenda, and how we can build fruitful collaborations.

  3. Post HRI workshop/tutorial session: Continue discussions on community needs and collaborate on grant proposals. You will also need to return the lended Jibo robot to us.

How do I sign up?

If you are interested in participating, please use this link to indicate your (or anyone else in your group’s) availability for partaking in the above activities.

If no one in your group can attend the HRI session on 3/15, but would like to host a Jibo robot up to 8 weeks and engage with us virtually, please use the same link to indicate your interest. This HRI session is only the beginning of future engagements we hope to nurture with you.

What do I need to bring?

Awesome yourself, a laptop/charger. You can also bring a friend (human or robot) if you want to try befriending them with Jibo.
